Background Charging

Better Place CEO Shai Agassi has a grand vision for his company to provide mass infrastructure for the electric vehicles of the world. Automotive partner Renault has just announced the all-electric Fluence ZE –the first car to feature Better Place’s battery swapping technology. Drivers have the option of topping off batteries at charging parking stalls, or dropping them off in exchange for one that is fresh and fully charged. The automated pit stop takes about two minutes and you’re on your way with a full tank.  Better Place’s roll out addresses opportune markets globally where driving distances and fleet operations give its approach traction. Initial deployments include Denmark, Israel, California, Hawaii and Japan–where it has a pilot partnership with Tokyo’s largest taxi operator, Nihon Kotsu. Since the vehicle owner doesn’t need to buy the battery, Better Place will be able to upgrade the range based on new technologies–and to provide the subscription recharging service using renewable sources of electricity. With more than $250m in startup funding and a long list of partners, Better Place is a seed to watch.
